Frankfurt 17-19 May

Friday 17 May
Good Uber trip from home cost just A$40.  Left Brisbane at 1am this day and arrived in Frankfurt at 7:30 am on the same day after a 5 hour wait in Hong Kong!

Our Premium Economy Cathay Pacific flight to HK was not great - seating more cramped than in Air NZ and I had great difficulty climbing out of my window seat as the guy in front had his seat way back the whole flight.  Aircraft on to Frankfurt was more comfortable.  Interesting that Cathay had no issues with heavy SS cutlery - food was quite good.
Quick, seamless walk out of Frankfurt airport, compared to security nonsense at Hong Kong.  No problem getting taxi €31 to Leonardo Royal hotel but busy desk there.  Tiny elevators just catered for us and 3 bags.  Room was surprisingly spacious with separate desk area, very clean and modern.  Bathroom posed problems as pole holding shower in bath was not secured and very high sides on bath.  Asked for room with shower but not possible.
David walked outside to scout for a breakfast cafe and supermarket, finding them together just the other side of our hotel.
We both had a good night's sleep.

Saturday 18 May
Good cheap breakfast at Cafe Ernst, followed by shopping for essentials - wine, beer, cheese, crackers.
Walked 6000 steps north, crossing Main River to look for Romer (historical area) and Museum of Moderne Art.  Latter is closed for some weeks and we only saw part of Romer.  However, we enjoyed the river and street views and had a simple lunch - foamed white asparagus soup (me) and frankfurt with mustard and rye bread (D).  Rather tired walking the 6000 steps back, a bit uphill.
5pm when we returned after stopping at Aldi for bananas and yoghurt.  Shower had been fixed.

Sunday 19 May Went to Ernst for breakfast. Sunday so supermarket closed.
Our computer is not working  so blogging and photo downloads difficult.

We walked down to the old city centre, most of which was reconstructed after the war.  The weather was great and the city seemed a very relaxing place for tourists and locals.

Lovely Sunday weather by the River Main
Walked down to Städel Museum and paid €12 each.  We preferred the paintings from 15th C to 19th C to more modern art.
Jan van Eyck, 1437, Lucca Madonna
Titian, 1546-1548, Self-Portrait
Lucas Cranach, 1559, Philipp Melanchthon
Tischbein, 1787, Goethe
Koch, 1803, Noah's Sacrifice
Renoir, 1879, After Luncheon
Cosmos organised a meeting after dinner for all participants.  I was shocked to find that 38 people would be on the bus.  Our guide, Simone, seemed very efficient and emphasized importance of noting departure times, being on time.  We met no-one and knew no names.

Monday 20 May
We boarded the wrong tour bus and did not notice until all announcements continued in Spanish. We had seen Cosmos luggage near hotel door and were trying to do the right thing by boarding early.  Smiles and greetings from our breakfast neighbours were reassuring.
It was not even a Cosmos tour!  The tour guide phoned our Frankfurt hotel to inform Simone.  The bus continued on a freeway for 30 minutes before stopping at Buttelburn Serway service station. We were lucky that the staff phoned Simone and a taxi which took 30 minutes to arrive.  Meanwhile our bus left Frankfurt 40 minutes late because of our mistake.  What a shame!  It cost us €100 for the taxi and €264 for a train to Berlin.
